VISIT OF DR. N. C. SAXENA COMMITTEE TO NIYAMGIRI HILLTOP

Following the visit of Dr. N. C. Saxena from 7th to 9th July 2010, the remaining three members are on a visit to Rayahaga and kalahandi districts, in connection with the proposed mining area of OMC, which is a part of the Vedanta Aluminium Project, in Lanjigarh, Kalahandi. The members along with Collector Kalahandi visited some Kuita Kondh villages and interacted with the local people. The members, along with Collector Rayagada, Dr. Nitin. B. Jawale and Collector Kalahandi, Ms. Roopa Misra and Other senior officials of Forest Dept. visited the hill top of Niyamgiri on 20th July 2010. The committee is to finalize their report by the end of this month and the visit to Niyamgiri Hill top is an important exercise in this matter. The team had to climb more than 1000 meters to crossing numerous hurdles to reach the hill top. The proposed mining area ia patch of 600 hectares on the Niyamgiri hill ranges, a name loosely applied to the sector of Eastern Ghats,that runs parallel to the entire length of Rayagada-Kalahandi district border. The proposed mining area is flat barren area with scant vegetation of seasonal grass, typical of Bauxite bearing hills. The members will visit the Donagria Kondh villages in Rayagada on 21st July 2010 and halt at Rayagada the next day.
